Engine 181, Tower 18 and Chief 18A respond to Fire in Bowie
On March 25, 2024, just minutes after calling the firehouse to up 2 crews, communications dispatched Box 1601 for the report of an apartment fire in the 15600 BLK of Everglade Ln, bringing the Engine Company and Tower Ladder as the fourth due engine and first due truck. Chief 18A also marked up on the box. En route, Public Safety Communications advised they were receiving multiple calls all advising the same incident and possible people trapped. Engine 16 arrived to a 4 story apartment building with fire showing from the 3rd and 4th floors and through the roof. Battalion Chief 2 assumed command shortly after and requested the 2nd alarm. Engine 18 picked up the third due engine’s supply line and established RIT, while Tower 18 was assigned to the 3rd floor to complete searches, as well as deploy a ladder to side Bravo to rescue residents trapped on the balcony. Two residents and a dog were rescued via a ground ladder. The inside team performed searches, forced multiple doors and opened up ceilings. Crews operated interior for just over 10 minutes before a significant roof collapse forced crews to evacuate and switch to defensive operations. The Tower deployed the bucket for ladder pipe operations. After all visible fire was knocked, crews were redeployed for overhaul and mop up. The Tower crew operated well into the night hitting hot spots before returning to service.
