Tower 18, Chief 18, and Engine 181 Respond to 2 Alarm Apartment Fire in Laurel
Around 21:00 hours on December 7th, 2025, a box alarm was dispatched to the 9800 Block Muirfield Drive in Co. 45’s area. Shortly after dispatch, the address was updated to the 9500 Block of Muirkirk Road in Laurel Co. 49’s area for an apartment on fire, bringing Tower 18 as the second due truck on the box. Chief 18 (Postell) marked up on the call, as the Volunteer Duty Chief. En route, units were advised there was a trapped baby and that the fire was set by an occupant who was in police custody. Police advised the top floor was well involved. Engine Co. 10 arrived to a 2 in the front, 4 in the rear garden apartment with fire showing from the top floor. The Volunteer Duty Chief arrived shortly after and assumed the Laurel command and requested the 2nd Alarm due to well advanced fire conditions. Shortly after crews made entry, it was discovered that the original fire unit door had been barricaded. That combined with a roof failure forced command to evacuate the structure. The Tower Ladder’s bucket was deployed for aerial operations and supplied by Engine Co. 10. After defensive operations knocked down the bulk of the fire, crews were sent back in for mop up and secondary searches. The Tower operated on the fire floor, opening up walls and checking for further extension and hot spots. Searches of the structure were negative. Command requested 2 additional engines to the scene, which brought Engine 181, who had been handling a medical local when the incident began and they reported to the staging area and were later released. Crews operated on scene well into the night before returning to service.
